6 Dead, Several Missing After Bridge Collapses Over Indrayani River in Pune

Nagpur, India: A tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening when a bridge collapsed over the Indrayani River near Kundmala in Talegaon Dabhade, Pune district, resulting in the deaths of at least six people and leaving several others feared drowned.

The bridge, which connected two banks of the river, gave way while a large number of people were crossing, many of whom were reportedly returning from a religious event. Eyewitnesses said the structure collapsed suddenly, plunging people into the river below. Panic and chaos followed as bystanders rushed to help and emergency services were alerted.

Rescue operations were launched immediately by the local authorities with the help of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire brigade personnel, and police. As of Sunday night, six bodies had been recovered, and the search continues for more victims feared to be swept away by the river’s strong current.

The exact cause of the collapse is still under investigation, but early reports suggest that the bridge was in a weakened state and may not have been maintained adequately. Local residents claimed they had raised concerns about the structure’s condition several times, but no significant repairs were made.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh each for the families of the deceased. He also assured that a thorough inquiry would be conducted and strict action taken if any negligence is found.

This incident has once again raised questions about the safety and upkeep of infrastructure in the region, especially ahead of the monsoon season. Authorities have pledged to inspect other old and vulnerable bridges to prevent similar tragedies.
