Firecrackers Ignite Tragedy in Nagpur: Jaikamal Complex Fire Kills Two

Nagpur, India: A major fire broke out on Saturday evening at Jaikamal Complex in the Mahal area of Nagpur, claiming the lives of two men and injuring two others. The incident occurred around 7:30 pm inside a warehouse located on the first floor of the complex, which was reportedly storing firecrackers and decorative items illegally.

According to local police and fire officials, the blaze erupted during welding work being carried out in the flat. Stored pyrotechnics and electrical items caught fire, resulting in thick smoke and multiple small explosions that caused panic in the neighbourhood.

Two men — Girish Khatri (35), the owner of the light and décor warehouse “M.K. Light House,” and Vitthal Dhode (25) — were trapped inside and died from suffocation. Two others, Gunvant Nagpurkar (28) and Aishwarya Trivedi, were rescued by firefighters and rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) with serious injuries.

Residents claim they had earlier complained to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) about the illegal storage of firecrackers in the flat, but no strict action was taken despite repeated warnings and fines. The congested location of the building, along with narrow access lanes, delayed firefighting efforts.

Following the incident, a case has been registered against the flat owner and his brother for negligence and for endangering lives through illegal storage of hazardous materials. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to their families after post-mortem examinations at GMCH.

Authorities have stationed a fire tender at the site as a precaution, and a detailed investigation is underway. The tragic incident has raised fresh concerns about lax safety enforcement and the risk posed by unauthorised storage in residential areas.
