Grief Turns Dramatic as Man Tries to Leap into Lover’s Pyre at Kanhan Ghat

Nagpur, India: A deeply emotional incident shocked mourners at Kanhan Ghat when a 22-year-old man attempted to leap into the funeral pyre of his deceased girlfriend on Sunday. The young woman, aged 19, had allegedly died by suicide, and her final rites were being performed when the drama unfolded.

The man, identified as Anurag Meshram, arrived at the cremation site in an intoxicated state. As the funeral was underway, he suddenly rushed towards the burning pyre, attempting to throw himself into it. However, family members and relatives quickly intervened and pulled him back. In the heat of the moment, some reportedly beat him up before the police arrived at the scene.

Police officials from New Kamptee Station confirmed that Anurag was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries and was later discharged. During his statement, he clarified that he did not intend to end his life, but was overwhelmed with grief and only wanted one last glimpse of his late girlfriend.

According to Inspector Mahesh Andhale, Anurag was under the influence of alcohol and emotionally unstable at the time. He has not filed any complaint against the relatives who assaulted him during the incident.

The deceased girl had reportedly left behind a note stating that no one was responsible for her actions. While her family suspects foul play, police have currently registered a case of accidental death. Further investigation is underway.

Authorities plan to record Anurag’s formal statement after ensuring his emotional well-being.
