If a minor is found driving without a license, the fine is now ₹25,000

The Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 was recently changed by the Maharashtra government in an effort to reduce the number of fatalities and accidents on the roads brought on by teenage drivers. As a result of the legislation, parents whose minor children are found driving without a licence would face stiffer sanctions.

According to the amended law, parents will now be subject to a severe fine of Rs 25,000 and their kids won't be allowed to get a licence till they're 25. Individuals under the age of 18 are not permitted to operate a motor vehicle in any public space, according to the amended rule. However, it allows people who are at least 16 years old to operate motorcycles with an engine size of no more than 50CC.

According to government statistics, almost 15,000 individuals in the state pass away due to traffic accidents each year. Surprisingly, two-wheeler drivers were responsible for more than half of these collisions between January 2022 and December 2022, which led to 7,700 fatalities.

The announcement instructed Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) to strictly enforce Section 18, which forbids anyone under the age of 20, from operating transport vehicles in public areas, and to prioritise implementing the Act's restrictions for two-wheeler drivers. The action attempts to make the environment safer and lessen the number of fatalities brought on by traffic accidents.
