Prime Minister Narendra Modi has named India’s recent retaliatory military action against terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as Operation Sindoor, in a heartfelt tribute to the widows of those killed in the Pahalgam terror attack.
The name “Sindoor” symbolises the sacred red mark worn by married Hindu women, representing their husband’s life. The Prime Minister, during a high-level security meeting, said the attack not only took innocent lives but also shattered families, leaving many women widowed. Naming the operation “Sindoor” was meant to honour their loss and show that India stands with them in grief and strength.
The military strikes, which involved coordinated efforts by the Army, Navy and Air Force, targeted nine identified terrorist hubs across the border. These sites were believed to be behind the 22 April Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives, mostly civilians.
The strikes were carried out with precision, showcasing India's resolve to respond strongly to cross-border terrorism. Government sources said that the decision to go ahead with the operation was taken after intelligence confirmed the locations of terror infrastructure.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi also backed the emotional tone of the response, calling on the government to grant official martyr status to the victims of the Pahalgam attack — a call that echoes widespread public sentiment across the country.
As tensions remain high in the region, international reactions continue to pour in, with many countries urging India and Pakistan to de-escalate and return to the path of dialogue.
