NMC Set to Hold Elections Under 4-Member Ward System After 3-Year Gap

Nagpur, India: After more than three years of administrative rule, the Maharashtra government has taken a key step towards restoring elected governance in Nagpur by initiating the process for Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections. The state Urban Development Department has authorised the NMC Commissioner to begin ward delimitation under the four-member "Prabhag" system.

This decision follows the Supreme Court’s directive to conduct pending local body elections within four months, pushing the state to act promptly. The four-member ward structure, used in the 2017 elections, will now be reinstated, allowing each ward to elect four corporators. In some instances, wards may have three or five representatives, depending on population figures from the 2011 Census.

The ward delimitation will consider population balance, community representation, reservations for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, as well as geographical continuity. Tools like Google Earth will assist in mapping and ensuring transparency. The draft maps will be made available for public objections and suggestions before finalisation by the State Election Commission.

Alongside the NMC elections, polls are also scheduled for 14 municipal councils and eight nagar panchayats across the Nagpur district. This move is expected to bring back democratic functioning in local bodies, empowering citizens after years of bureaucratic oversight.

Political analysts view this development as a crucial moment for major parties like the BJP and Congress, both of which are expected to begin groundwork for campaigning under the reintroduced ward system. The elections are anticipated to reshape the city’s political landscape as public participation returns to centre stage.
