Nagpur Traffic Police Crack Down on Wrong-Side Drivers

NAGPUR – In a recent drive against traffic violations, Nagpur traffic police booked 264 individuals last week for driving on the wrong side of the road, officials reported to the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court. The information was disclosed during a hearing on a public interest litigation spearheaded by Advocate Sandeep Badana, focusing on road safety and traffic compliance.

The court hearing, attended by Justice Nitin Sambre and Justice Abhay Mantri, reviewed actions taken against those flouting traffic norms. It followed complaints regarding the absence of speed breakers on newly constructed outer ring roads, which had reportedly led to an increase in accidents.

During the proceedings, it was also revealed that traffic authorities are facing challenges in collecting fines. An estimated ₹35 crore in penalties issued over recent years remains uncollected due to gaps in enforcement mechanisms.

In response to earlier court directives, traffic police have installed speed breakers at critical junctions such as Dabha, Gorewada, and Katol Naka square to mitigate accident risks. Despite these measures, the issue of wrong-side driving persists, contributing to ongoing safety concerns in the city, as noted by the petitioner. This ongoing issue underscores the need for stronger enforcement and better compliance strategies to ensure road safety.
